New Information Available on Offshore Wind Website

It’s been about one month since the official launch of northcoastoffshorewind.org, and we’re thrilled with the response! Many of you have sent in great questions and comments, and based on feedback from community members like you, we’ve added new details to many of our answers.

This includes more details about the impacts of climate change on the North Coast, more clarity on the offshore wind development timelines, and new information about the potential impacts to the fishing community from offshore wind. We’ve also added three entirely new question & answer pages:

For those interested in potential visual impacts, tracking onshore transmission lines and substations, or understanding the work being done to better understand the offshore ocean ecosystem, these FAQ pages are a great place to start.

We received one question about whether Humboldt County residents would receive electricity from the offshore wind project directly. The answer is yes — under the approved CAISO transmission plan, offshore wind electricity would connect directly to the local Humboldt electric grid.

We also received several questions about potential impacts to birds. While we do have an answer currently on the website, we understand that much of the information there is based on studies from outside of Humboldt. Rest assured that we will be updating that answer (and our understanding) as new information is collected in the Humboldt area.

Some questions we’ve received are a bit more complicated, but we are hard at work to answer them. We will soon publish webpages regarding impacts from earthquakes/tsunamis, damage to wind turbine blades, and the Missing and Murdered Indigenous People Crisis.

Please keep engaging with the website, exploring what you’re concerned or curious about, and asking questions! It’s so important that we hear your comments and questions, and do our best to fully understand these proposed projects. And if you read the website and think a resource is missing or we got something wrong, please let us know about that too!

I’m honestly really enjoying connecting with you all through the website and I love researching topics for it. We’re in for a very long process as the offshore wind projects in question aren’t proposed to actually be built until the 2030s. My plan is to spend the next decade gathering as much information as I can and sharing it with all of you so that we can decide as a community whether these projects are right for us. Stay tuned for more information!
