Eureka Leads the State in Local Support for 30x30

On the evening of Tuesday, August 20th, the Eureka City Council unanimously passed a resolution declaring their support for 30x30, and declaring Eureka a “30x30 Community for Nature”. 30x30 is an international and California state movement to conserve 30% of lands and coastal waters by 2030 in order to stave off some of the worst effects of climate change.

The request for the Eureka City Council to pass this resolution came from the Power in Nature coalition, a statewide coalition dedicated to furthering 30x30 in the state of California. Power in Nature coalesces over 100 different environmental and community groups, tribal organizations and land trusts to advocate for 30x30 policies, funding and conservation projects that count towards the state’s 30x30 goal. Power in Nature is organizing to get resolutions supporting 30x30 passed in various cities and counties throughout the state to demonstrate to legislators that 30x30 matters to communities within their district, and because of that, they should therefore keep funding conservation efforts, and not cut funding to the various programs and conservancies that allow for the important 30x30 conservation and restoration work to keep taking place around the state.

With the abundance of recreational lands, beaches and rivers that Eureka residents get to enjoy by residing in one of the most beautiful parts of the state, it is no surprise that their constituents want to preserve and safeguard our natural relatives. We get to see, first hand, why funding conservation is so important!

As we celebrate this milestone in demonstrating local 30x30 support, we hope this serves as an example for other cities and counties to learn from. The more support for 30x30 that we can show, the better! Learn more at www.powerinnature.org.
